The Heavy Repeaters of 2024...So Far

Because, as we can see, I'm egotistical enough to believe that my music taste is godlike (It's not, I'm just extremely self-centred).

Every year, I start a playlist on my Spotify that documents the songs I've been loving and consistently repeating. There are some consistent repeaters such as Arctic Monkeys, The Beatles, Lana Del Rey, amongst others. Here are my favorite songs of 2024, so far.

Crumb

This song has been a heavy hitter since the summer of 2023, arguably one of the best and worst summers of my life. The first time I heard this song, I was sitting in my Dad and step mom's kitchen in the Bay Area, and I remember it became a favorite when I was driving down highway 101 from the Bay Area down to Los Angeles where my mom lives. I had the windows down, sun blasting, Balloon playing so loud I'm sure the other cars could hear me.

Later in the year, I saw Crumb at Outsidelands and saw a guy take a fist full of mushrooms before running into the crowd, which I feel like captures Crumb's aura much better than I can ever describe in writing.

Fontaines D.C.

No notes. Just pure obsession.

The Stone Roses

I grew up listening to this song with my mom considering she is a MASSIVE Cornetto Trilogy and Edgar Wright fan, which is probably why we both felt so at ease traveling to the UK and with me eventually moving there. Were our perceptions of the UK purely based on comedy movies? Absolutely. Were they also proven correct within the first 20 minutes of being in a Wetherspoons? Also, yes.

Nothing makes me feel cooler than putting on my headphone and walk down the streets of London blasting The Stone Roses, flat white in hand, cigarette in the other. If you see me walking in the streets of South London with my headphones on, strutting like I'm the shit, it's probably because Fools Gold is playing. Ignore and go about your day, per usual.

My coworkers probably despise me for playing this song nearly every single day on the speaker in the office, but I can't be blamed for falling in love with such an amazing song. While Spotify's algorithm has been lacking in recent times, they did kill it with introducing me to this song on my Daylist.

Arctic Monkeys

I thank God everyday I have yet to blow through their entire discography so I can continue finding these B-Sides that make me feel what I felt when I heard Humbug for the first time.

Every single indie girl has also had Arctic Monkeys shoved down their throats in the worst way possibly by sad indie boys. So, I'll spare the same details that I genuinely find interesting about the song, but indie boys will regurgitate to make it seem like they're cool and well versed or won't emotionally manipulate you.

Blue Hawaii

Working in fashion means you exclusively hear two types of music: house music, and Maneater by Nelly Furtado on repeat 24/7. I never listened to house music until getting into the world of fashion. I'm an indie rock girl through and through, but some dimension in my media and music consumption wouldn't hurt.

This song warmed my soul after a night out at the pub with my coworkers. We went back to one's apartment in Hackney, and not only was the apartment STUNNING, I melted into the obscenely large, yet perfectly sized for any and all occasions, couch while Blue Hawaii played softly over a sea of candles and inscence.

10/10 for vibes, 10/10 as a great late nite song, and a gold star for the song that broke my stubborn mind out of an indie rock hellscape.
